The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles was founded in 1953 by
a handful of Southern California advertising artists and designers primarily to
promote the professional status of illustration art as well as foster both
philanthropic and educational goals. From this small beginning it has grown to
a very productive membership whose work is seen locally and nationally by
millions each year in all printed media, television, films the Internet and
gallery exhibitions.
Today SILA has close to 200 members and is firmly established as the
major professional art entity on the West coast providing significant
contribution to the vitality of not only the community itself but the nation as
well.
"Do not fail, as you go on, to draw
something every day, for no matter how little it is it will be well worthwhile,
and it will do you a world of good."
-- Cennini, 1370 – 1440
Our scholarship program is for students enrolled in an
institution offering a full-time bachelors degree program. This program is a
volunteer program and currently we are hoping a member will volunteer to chair
the competition. We do have a scholarship through our annual competition,
Illustration West. The show chairman is currently working on the Call for Entries
and we'll be mailing information to the students first and we will be posting
it on our website.

Illustrator/Fine Artist and Educator
(and one of our judges
for Illustration West 45), Yuko Shimizu will give her first talk and
presentation in Los Angeles! This special event will be moderated
by the one and only Mark Murphy (Designer/Publisher)who
will give a talk and presentation as well.
Presented in honor of the 150th anniversary of
the birth of Sigmund Freud (1856–1939), this exhibition illustrates nearly 80
years of our culture’s preoccupation with what happens inside the therapist’s
office. The assemblage of more than 75 cartoons published in the pages of The
New Yorker depicts, as the magazine’s cartoon editor Bob Mankoff puts it,
“the shrink and the shrunk, the practitioner and the practiced upon.” Through
these artists’ humorous drawings, The New Yorker has developed the codes
and iconography of the therapy setting: the bearded analyst, the diplomas on
the wall, and, of course, the couch—not to mention its neurotic occupants!
Featured artists in the exhibition include Peter Arno, Roz Chast, J.C. Duffy,
and Bruce Eric Kaplan.
Imagine That is a student exhibition showcasing
the work of current illustration students and CSUN alumni. Join us Friday,
September 29, 2006 from 6-10pm for our artists’ reception and Illustration Club
launch party. Event is free and open to all ages. The show will run from
September 29th-Octber 5th and will be at California State University
Northridge’s West Gallery.
